The moniker "Half-Okie" came from a series of accidents my dad had. Born in Anadarko, Oklahoma, my dad married my mom, a Nevadan. Therefore, I am 1/2 Okie.

In 1971 my dad ran his right hand into the lawn mower. He reached to move something without turning it off first. I had been instructed to ALWAYS TURN THE D*(&( THING OFF before reaching near the mower

A microsurgeon who just returned from Viet Nam saved his fingers and Dad continued his job as a diesel mechanic.

My dad's instructions were clear, NEVER CUT UP WITH A CHAIN SAW. It was about two years later that is exactly what he did and bounced the saw off the back of his left hand. The only lasting issue was a little loss of feeling in that hand. He also checked the acid level in batteries at work while smoking a cigarette. Not once but twice.

Since I am a "Half-Okie", I only cut myself occasionally. The finger shows the healed scar from a glancing touch of a table saw blade. My retired RN wife patched me up "as good as new." My kids laugh at the fact I sliced my finger twice with the same serrated bread knife.

Beginning a retirement hobby in woodworking I hope there will be no more such accidents. Yet, I am half-Okie so I'm sure it's only a matter of time....
